Sipping the Perfect Old Fashioned: A Cozy Afternoon at The Porch in Dallas

Wanauma Graham is the editor of BF Mag. She's a writer and digital product designer who was born and raised in California, although she now calls Dallas, Texas home.

Place: The Porch, Dallas TX.

Mood: Spending a sunny afternoon at The Porch with my Dallas photographer friend, Jase Johns.

I mean, could the day be any better? A warm December weekend, the sun shining like it's spring, and the weather—a perfect 70 degrees. I live for days like this. Seriously, I'll take a sundress and heeled sandals over anything else. Just the other week, I was telling Jase that I’m already missing summer.

I’ve learned to embrace every season, but there’s something about that late spring-to-early summer sweet spot in Dallas—it’s like the city buzzes with good energy. It’s a time to soak up the sun and bask in my progress. Last summer was a bit chaotic with everything going on, but I imagine the next one will be exactly as I envision:

Patio dining.

New adventures.

Incredible food.

Long, peaceful walks.

And yes, calmly productive days.

But back to today. I need to tell you about my late lunch at The Porch in Dallas. Jase and I spent a solid 10 minutes searching where to go (the best problem to have in a city like Dallas with endless dining options). It was Jase’s turn to pick, and he suggested The Porch—apparently a staple on Henderson Ave. Neither of us had ever been before, and now I can’t wait to go back.

We walked in on a Saturday afternoon, and the vibe was nice, warm and cozy. The real draw? It was the perfect day for dining on the patio. There’s something about being outdoors, watching the world go by, and having great conversation. With Jase, it’s always a deep, good convo that just makes the time fly.

Our waitress—she was an absolute gem. So sweet, attentive, and just all-around lovely.

We kicked things off with a cocktail. As soon as I heard “marshmallow” and “Old Fashioned” in the same sentence, I knew that was the one. We both did. Now, I’m not a big drinker, but I do love a good whiskey. This was a Roasted Marshmallow Old Fashioned for $15, and let me tell you, it was worth every penny.

Here’s a pro tip: take a sip, then grab the roasted marshmallow and take a bite. It’s a rich, smoky, sweet experience. So, so good.

Before I continue,

As we enjoyed the atmosphere and sipped on our cocktails, Jase and I were talking about growth—how we're both wanting to get to a place where we could experience more growth. Have you ever felt like there’s more in you and more to experience in life, but you haven’t fully expressed that version of yourself?

Full transparency: That's how I’ve been feeling lately and I’m ready to step into that. I’m satisfied and content with my business progress, but I’m not settling for slow and steady in regard to my life. I’m ready to reach out, expand, and explore new things.

My theme for 2025? Take Up Space.

Just as I was feeling all inspired, the smell of Smoked Brussels Sprouts with hot honey glaze wafted through the air, completely distracting me from the conversation. I didn’t order them this time, but mark my words—next time, they’re on my list.

The vibe, the waitress, the atmosphere—everything was so good, it’s already on my radar for a return.

Speaking of our waitress—great service. Let’s talk about the ordering process for a second. Our waitress was a pro. She was attentive, checking in at the perfect times, and made recommendations since it was our first time. Her energy and voice were so calming, it matched the vibe of the day. And when I asked if my salad could be finely chopped (I know, a bit of a weird request), she handled it with zero hesitation. She made everything easy, breezy, and stress-free.

Jase got the Smoked Sticky Ribs with a chipotle honey glaze and cilantro. I didn’t indulge in those, but they looked so good. And according to Jase, they were perfect. Drenched in sauce and falling off the bone.

As for me, I went with the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Salad with house buttermilk ranch, minus the bacon. What’s not to love about a salad?

I was pleasantly surprised when our waitress brought it over. I was expecting grilled chicken and please don’t ask why, when this dish is clearly named, “Buttermilk Fried Chicken Salad”. Not sure what I was thinking. I’m not into fried chicken or fried foods in general, but when I saw this salad…I had to make an exception.

I’m not a picky eater, just selective. I like the idea of eating healthy and delicious at the same time. But listen, life is to be enjoyed. I remind myself that it’s totally okay to indulge sometimes.

Oh, and the location? The Porch was in a nice spot, right on Henderson Ave. Sitting on the patio you could watch the traffic go by and it wasn’t too noisy. I enjoy that sort of thing. Parking was fine, meaning we were able to find a spot, which is always a win in Dallas. One common complaint is that the valet takes up a lot of spaces, but it's convenient when you need it. Valet parking was right behind the restaurant with easy access to the front entrance through a quaint little side patio.

When we finished our meals, our waitress asked if we were ready for dessert and we both politely shook our heads from side to side—no, thank you, we were completely satisfied. But then, in the softest voice, she mentioned they had a gooey butter cake with Henry’s butterscotch ice cream and salted caramel, and we both perked up. She almost had me! But no, we didn’t do it. Next time? Definitely.

She also let us know about $2 martinis on Tuesdays, so yeah, I’ll be back soon to report on those Brussels sprouts and that butter cake!

Enjoy Dallas,

Nauma
